Záboj and Slavoj. Illustration of the Dvůr Králové Manuscript printing. Old Czech heroic and love songs
After returning from his studies in Munich, Mánes made study trips to the Czech countryside and Slovakia, where he drew on figural and ornamental motifs to depict the ideal Czech (Slavic) national type. He started from the idea that ancient customs and ways of life still survived among the rural people, where they could be authentically captured. The result was a combination of the ideal of a long-gone golden age, of the rugged Czech-Slav, with expressive features of folk, rural immediacy, supplemented by "national attributes", partly taken from contemporary Slovak customs.
