Baltic Study
Water is generally considered a feminine element. Waters both captivate and frighten by their impenetrability, especially the impenetrable depths whose darkness symbolizes the enigmatic soul of a woman. Unlike the usual depictions by men, which rationally emphasise the danger of shipwreck, Olga Theofila Pikhartová depicts the sea as maternally comforting. She suppresses everything of material substance and lets the surface of the sea merge with the sky in simple glints and glows of light. How a woman herself can be permeated by the immense creative power of the sun's rays is indicated in Hana Kvapilova's prose, whose heroine becomes virtually united with the sea - indeed, with all of nature.
