Shadows in the Soul
The Symbolists viewed the soul as the source of art and perception and used the concept of life tirelessly as a measure of individual and collective existence. In their poetic works, the soul was depicted as isolated and materialized, moving through the world in a personified form, and assumed qualities of space. Conversely, life appeared as a disposition, as energy used for personal and social transformation, and as everything that surrounds the individual. As the artist may have drawn inspiration from his life experience, one may wonder if the soul in question was his own, or if instead he wished to hide his true inner self or capture some psychological aspect of modern man.
